How to apply for unemployment benefit

For us to be able to help you as quickly and efficiently as possible, please read and follow all the steps in the guide.

To apply for financial unemployment benefit, you will need to log in to Mina sidor.

You need an electronic ID to log in. If you do not have one, plaese contact us.

To qualify for compensation, you must have reached the age of 20 and meet both the Basic Conditions and an Income Condition.
The basic conditions mean that you need to be able to work and unhindered from taking a job, be registered as a job seeker with the Swedish Public Employment Service, and otherwise be available to the labor market.

The income condition means that you must have earned at least SEK 120,000 during the 12 months before unemployment and at least SEK 11,000 in at least 4 of the 12 months.

Have you received a decision on your right to compensation before October 1, 2025? Then the previous conditions for compensation apply until the end of the days.

In order to receive a compensation period from the unemployment insurance fund, you need to meet an income condition.

You meet the income condition if, within the framework period (the time that the unemployment insurance fund looks at to see if you as an applicant meet the conditions for receiving compensation), you have had a total income from work of at least SEK 120,000 before tax, and that during four of the months you have earned at least SEK 11,000 a month before tax, or earned at least SEK 11,000 before tax for four consecutive months.

All income from work may be counted, and income includes salary and other remuneration for which the employer pays employer contributions. The unemployment insurance fund obtains the income information from the Swedish Tax Agency.

For those of you who are self-employed, income for which you pay self-contributions is counted.

Have you received a decision on your right to compensation before 1 October 2025? Then the previous conditions for compensation apply until the days are up.

The frame time is the time that the unemployment insurance fund looks at to see if you, as an applicant, meet the conditions for receiving compensation. The frame time usually consists of the last 12 months before the month you apply for unemployment compensation.

If you have not been able to work due to, for example, illness, caring for children or full-time studies, the frame time can be postponed.

You can get compensation for a maximum of 300 days and a minimum of 66 days.

The number of days you can get compensation for varies depending on what your work situation was like before you became unemployed.

To be entitled to compensation from the unemployment insurance fund, you must meet an income condition. You do this if you have had a total income from work of at least SEK 120,000 before tax within the framework period and have had an income of at least SEK 11,000 before tax for at least four months.

If you have had income from work of at least SEK 11,000 before tax for 11 or more months, you will get 300 days.
If you have had income from work of at least SEK 11,000 before tax for 8–10 months, you will get 200 days.
If you have had income from work of at least SEK 11,000 before tax for 4–7 months, you will get 100 days.
If you have not earned a total of 120,000 SEK before tax during the framework period, but have had four consecutive months with an income of at least 11,000 SEK before tax per month, you can receive compensation for 66 days. This is called the alternative rule.

The previous possibility of extending the compensation period for those with children under 18 years of age will no longer exist after the new rules came into force on 1 October 2025.

Have you received a decision on your right to compensation before 1 October 2025? In that case, the previous conditions for compensation will apply until the days are up.

No, the possibility of extending the compensation period for those with children under 18 is not available in the new unemployment insurance.

Have you received a decision on your right to compensation before October 1, 2025? Then the previous conditions for compensation apply until the days are up.

The length of time you have been a member of the unemployment fund determines how much compensation you can get.

Depending on your membership period, you can get compensation of 80, 60 or 50 percent of your previous income.

The highest income that can be compensated in the new insurance is SEK 34,000 per month.

For 80 percent of previous income
To be able to get 80 percent of your previous income, you need to have been a member of an unemployment fund for a continuous period of at least 12 months and still be a member when you apply for compensation.

You also need to have been a member for all months within the time frame. By time frame we mean the 12 months that we look at to see if you meet the conditions for receiving compensation.

For 60 percent of previous income
If you meet the same criteria as above but have only been a member of an unemployment fund for 6 to 11 months, you can get 60 percent of your previous income.

For 50 percent of previous income
If you have been a member for less than 6 months, you can receive 50 percent of your previous income.

The compensation is reduced every hundredth day of compensation.
After 100 days of compensation, the compensation is reduced by 10 percentage points. After that, it is reduced by another 5 percentage points every hundredth day.

No, the compensation is reduced by 10 percentage points after 100 compensation days. After that, it is reduced by another 5 percentage points for every 100 days.

Have you received a decision on your right to compensation before October 1, 2025? Then the previous conditions for compensation apply until the end of the days.

Yes, you will receive higher compensation if you are a member of an unemployment fund. The number of months you have been a member determines how much you will receive in the new insurance.

Have you received a decision on your right to compensation before October 1, 2025? Then the previous conditions for compensation apply until the days are up.

You report time by filling out and submitting a Monthly Application.

You must fill in how much you earned if you have worked during the month, if you have been prevented from working for one or more days. This can be, for example, if you have been sick, received parental benefit or had sickness benefit from the Social Insurance Agency.

All time that you have not been able to work is counted. Obstacles during weekends also affect the compensation from the unemployment insurance fund.

We will subsequently reconcile the income that you have reported in your monthly application with the information in the employer's declaration that we obtain from the Swedish Tax Agency.

A month with full unemployment compensation corresponds to 22 compensation days. Both days with unemployment insurance fund and with activity support are counted as used compensation days.

You submit your Monthly Application when a full calendar month has ended and the compensation will be calculated and paid monthly in arrears. You cannot submit a monthly application before the end of the month.

Payment is usually made on the Thursday closest to the 25th of each month. The application must have been received by us no later than Monday of the same week as the payment. If it is received later, the payment will be made the following month instead.

A monthly application must not be older than three months. This means that the application must be submitted within three months of the month for which you are applying for compensation.

Have you received a decision on your right to compensation before October 1, 2025? Then the previous conditions for compensation apply until the days are up.

You can only receive compensation for the days you are unemployed, can take work and are actively looking for work.

If you work and receive income from there, the compensation will therefore be reduced accordingly.

You yourself are the one who fills in any income you have had during the month. You do this in the monthly application. The compensation from the unemployment insurance fund is then reduced based on this.

If you have not been able to take work because, for example, you have been caring for children or have been away, the compensation will be reduced for each day that you are not entitled to unemployment insurance. The reduction will be 1/22 of the monthly amount that would have been paid if you were completely unemployed. All time you have not been able to take work is counted, including Saturdays and Sundays.

Have you received a decision on your right to compensation before 1 October 2025? In that case, the previous conditions for compensation apply until the days are up.

From 1 October 2025, the compensation will be paid monthly.

Payment is usually made on the Thursday closest to the 25th of each month. The monthly application must be received by us no later than the Monday of the same week that the payment is made. If it is received later, the payment will be made the following month instead.

This also applies if you have an ongoing compensation period that you have received a decision on before 1 October 2025.

You can join the unemployment insurance fund immediately when you start working.

If you become unemployed after turning 20, your membership period in the unemployment insurance fund will affect how much compensation you can receive. The longer you have been a member and the more you have earned, the more you can receive in the new insurance.

Have you received a decision on your right to compensation before October 1, 2025? Then the previous conditions for compensation apply until the end of the days.

Yes, you must request an employer certificate from the employer(s) you have had during the framework period.

Have you received a decision on your right to compensation before October 1, 2025? Then the previous conditions for compensation apply until the days are up.

Important to know

Your compensation may be affected by your situation. For example, if you have worked extra or studied.

As a general rule, you are not entitled to unemployment benefits if you are an entrepreneur, but there are cases where you may still be entitled to benefits if you become unemployed. We will investigate what applies to you.

Read more under Entrepreneurs

When you are part-time unemployed, you can receive compensation for your loss of income for a maximum of 14 months. If you have both worked and received money from the unemployment insurance fund for a month, it is counted as a part-time month. If you have not worked at all, worked full-time or earned so much that you have not received any unemployment insurance, it is not counted as a part-time month.

As a general rule, you cannot receive compensation from the unemployment insurance fund while you are studying, as you are not considered unemployed in the sense of the insurance during your studies.

There are certain exceptions to the general rule. For example, if you study part-time, you may be entitled to compensation from the unemployment insurance fund during your studies. In order to study with an unemployment insurance fund, you must always have applied for it and have it approved.

What counts as studies is regulated in the laws governing unemployment insurance.

In order for the unemployment insurance fund to consider a course of study to be studies according to the regulations, the following points must be met:

There is a study plan. The participant is guided through the course through different sections, elements or chapters. The sections come in a certain order and are usually completed at certain times.
Knowledge tests are conducted. The participant's knowledge is checked one or more times during the course of the course.
A course certificate is issued. After successfully completing the training, some form of certificate or diploma is issued.
Training coordinator. You must be registered or enrolled with a training provider.
Study support. If it is possible to get study support for participation, it is a matter of studies
If you are unsure what applies to you, contact us

If you have studied full-time

If you have studied and have finished your studies, you may be entitled to compensation from the unemployment insurance fund. You must then have completed or definitively interrupted your studies. Definitively interrupting your studies means that no further studies are planned.

In order for your studies to be considered completed or interrupted, you must be able to prove it.

If your studies have been completed, you must prove it with a diploma.

If your studies have been interrupted, you must prove it with a certificate from the school.

To be entitled to compensation, you must meet a work condition. When we test whether you meet a work condition, we can skip the time you have studied, if you can prove that your studies have been completely completed or definitively interrupted.

In order for us to be able to skip the study period, you must also have turned 25 before your studies are completed or have worked for at least five consecutive months full-time before your studies. You must also otherwise meet the conditions for compensation.

Fill out a study certificate on My Pages.

Conditions for full-time studies and unemployment insurance

You may be entitled to compensation from the unemployment insurance fund while studying full-time under certain conditions. These are that:

Your previous work must not have ceased due to your studies.

Your studies must not prevent you from applying for and taking up full-time work.

Your studies must not be financed or have been financed with any form of student aid.

You need to have studied full-time for at least 15 weeks alongside a full-time job.

You can receive compensation for a maximum of 20 weeks while studying full-time during the same compensation period.

Breaks in studies

You are not entitled to compensation during holidays or other breaks in studies because during such breaks you are primarily seen as a student and not as a job seeker.

Part-time studies

You may be entitled to study part-time while receiving compensation from us. The maximum you can study and receive benefits from the unemployment insurance fund is 20 weeks during one and the same benefit period.

Conditions for part-time studies and unemployment insurance

In order for us to grant you compensation while you are studying part-time, the following conditions must be met:

The studies may not exceed 50 percent of full-time.

Your previous work may not have ceased due to the studies.

The studies may not prevent you from applying for and taking full-time work.

The studies may not be financed or have been financed with any form of student aid.

There are exceptions to the last point:

- If you have studied part-time with student aid, you may be allowed to continue your studies and receive compensation if you combined your studies with work for at least 15 weeks before you became unemployed.

  • If your previous studies were financed with adjustment study support, you may be allowed to continue your studies with compensation, provided that the other conditions are met. You cannot receive adjustment study support at the same time as receiving compensation from us.

Compensation in connection with an orientation course

If you participate in a training or other activity on a full-time or part-time basis, you can receive compensation while you are studying, provided that the course aims to:

provide an orientation about different professions and educational paths, or
facilitate the transition from one job to another.

You can receive compensation for a maximum of 15 days during the same compensation period in connection with an orientation course.

You are not entitled to compensation from the unemployment insurance fund during the same period as you receive severance pay. All compensation paid to you as compensation for the termination of your employment is considered severance pay.

Severance pay can take different forms, such as a lump sum, a monthly amount for a certain period of time or pension insurance. If you receive compensation from your employer and the reason for receiving the compensation is that your employment has ended, we will consider it as severance pay.

Compensation that is not considered severance pay:
Collectively agreed insurance compensation, such as AGE, severance pay from the Social Security Council, and AGB, severance pay from the Social Security Fund/AFA, is not considered severance pay.

Remember to register with the Public Employment Service even if you receive severance pay!

In order for us to approve your extra work as a side job, you must have shown that you have been able to perform work in your extra work for at least 12 months alongside full-time work.

The income may not exceed an average of SEK 3,060 per week from your extra work.

For companies, there is no income limit, but we will make deductions from your compensation for income that exceeds SEK 3,060 per week.

If your extra work is approved as a side job, the following applies:

You may continue to work to the extent that you did before without increasing the time during the course of your unemployment. The number of hours is stated in your decision on side work.
You do not need to report the work on your time sheets.
If you work more hours than your decision allows, your extra work ceases to be a side job. You must then contact us and report the work on your time sheets in the future.

If your side job is your own business and you increase your hours, your right to compensation will cease and you must immediately notify the unemployment insurance fund. To regain the right to compensation, you must either put your business on hold or cease operations.

It is important that you are aware that it affects your compensation from the unemployment insurance fund if you choose to apply for a pension. The level of your compensation is reduced in relation to how much pension you take out.

Private pension insurance that has not been paid by an employer does not affect your right to compensation from the unemployment insurance fund.

You have the right to apply for compensation from the unemployment insurance fund until the month you turn 66.

Please contact us if you have any questions before applying for a pension.

If you have resigned yourself or caused your employer to dismiss you, you risk being suspended from receiving compensation for a certain period of time. The same applies to entrepreneurs who cease profitable operations.

If you misbehave with your job search by, for example, not submitting the activity report, missing a scheduled appointment at the employment agency or similar, the measures will escalate in more steps.

Third time: Suspended from the right to compensation for 5 days.
